Women’s Intensive Outpatient Program

At Aurora Behavioral Health, we understand that women face unique challenges with mental health.  Our Tempe location now offers a Women’s Intensive Outpatient Program to provide treatment to women in a supportive, nurturing, and empowering environment with peers who can relate to the specific needs of women during different stages of life.

Challenges may include (but are not limited to) motherhood, relationships, reproduction, childhood trauma, and career struggles.

What is an intensive outpatient program (IOP)?

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a program designed to provide treatment to individuals who are seeking more support than a weekly individual session with a therapist but do not need inpatient level of care.  The program is designed to provide nine hours of therapy each week; Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1:00 to 4:00pm.   The set times and dates of the group can assist those who are working or have to secure childcare.

At Aurora Behavioral Health, the goal of our intensive outpatient program is to produce lasting mental health and behavioral change through support and education.  Each individual will receive an individual treatment plan, created with a licensed therapist, to help achieve their short-term goals that can lead to long-term success.

Who should consider the Women’s Intensive Outpatient Program for mental health treatment?

Adult women living in Arizona ages 18 years and older experiencing any of the following:

  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Trauma related to labor/delivery
  • Grief
  • Relationship issues including divorce or infidelity
  • Anxiety/depression
  • Feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of motherhood
  • Lack of support from partner or family
  • Any other struggle not listed above that you feel other women can identify with

Not all women who face the above challenges require care from an intensive outpatient program. If you or someone you love believes that they need help to improve their mental health, it is important to reach out to a behavioral health professional for a full assessment.

What does an average day in an intensive outpatient mental health program look like?

At Aurora Behavioral Health, patients follow a schedule that helps them get the most out of their intensive outpatient treatment sessions. Each session features a combination of therapeutic modalities; such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and positive psychology.  The licensed therapist presents information in many different ways to help each member learn in their own style; including written, visual, auditory, and experiential methods.

The goal for each session is to help patients gain a better understanding of themselves, their triggers, their unhealthy coping skills, and how past events may impact current behavior.  Sessions are created to teach skills for managing stress, relaxation, reframing negative self-talk, improving their quality of life through self-care, and empowering women.

Additionally, for patients who require medication for their mental health, they may be able to meet with an on-site psychiatrist to assist in medication management and education sessions as needed.

Toward the end of each program, the therapist and patient work together to ensure a smooth transition out of the program.  This discharge plan may include establishing with an individual therapist, medication management, 12-step programs, or other support groups.
