How Can I Take Part In Mental Health Awareness Month?

How can I take part in Mental Health Awareness Month?

This May is about more than wearing a ribbon, it’s about recognizing no matter who or where you are that mental health is just as important as our physical health.  Just like taking care of our physical health provides us with the ability to move and play, taking care of our mental health means you can handle challenges that come your way. Big or small, we can all do things to raise awareness, what matters is our willingness to try.

What’s it all about?

From anxiety and depression to OCD and schizophrenia, mental health touches us all in some way.  Mental health issues are also a major contributor to suicide which claims the lives of nearly 50,000 people a year in the United States alone.

Awareness by definition means knowledge or perception of a situation or fact.  This May is about taking the time to really think about what mental health means to you as well as those around you.  It may seem like a difficult task, (physical distancing unfortunately does not make this any easier) but there are still many ways that you can get involved and raise awareness about mental health.

Anything you can and are willing to do is important and worthwhile when it comes to supporting mental health. According to Mental Health America (MHA), 1 in 5 people will experience mental illness during their lifetime. Even with so many people being impacted by mental illness, there is still a lot of stigma attached to seeking help or talking about these issues.  Mental Health Awareness Month is all about bringing these issues to light and starting the wheels of change. Change only happens when there are those brave enough to work for it, and mental health awareness is worth the effort.

How to get involved!

Even with physical distancing, there are ways to get involved and raise awareness this month. Here are a few examples:

  • Join the #millioninmay campaign. This May, MHA is aiming for 1 million mental health screenings at MHAscreening.org to normalize preventative measures for mental health conditions and encourage people to seek help.
  • Take a screening at MHAscreening.org and share that you “took a check-up from the neck up” and encourage others to do the same.
  • Share information locally! Ask wellness-oriented places like your local gym, yoga studio, or health food store to share digital resources from the MHA toolkit. You can also reach out to your personal and professional contacts to encourage them to download and share as well!
  • Spread messages of hope and take time for your mental health
